Chance

As soon as the portal closes behind them Malic asks, “How did you piss them off enough to leave you here like this?”

He snarls at us as he tests the boundaries of his temporary prison, “I was here minding my own business when they came and accosted me.”

I can’t keep from mentioning, “You know, I have run into them numerous times and been found by them in the garden. A few of those times while I was railing their granddaughter. Not once, for all my sarcasm and mouthy ways did they get to the point of using their magic on me. Make me wildly uncomfortable? Yes. Hands down I have never been so uncomfortable as when those two dirty old women saw me naked. All that to say, I call bullshit. What did you do?”

All three of them are standing there staring at me. Malic says, “They saw you naked?”

“Every inch as Valdís immediately ran for her clothing.”

Gage rolls his shoulders, the grimace on his face making him look like he is in pain. Malic shivers, turning to focus on Vincent, “Now that I have a new fear unlocked, what did you do?”

Vincent crosses his arms over his chest, turning his attention to something on the ground, “I might have been annoyed when they interrupted my alone time with their greeting and said something to the effect of they needed to be in a home.”

Malic groans, running a hand across the back of his neck, “Vincent. Really? I know you are having problems, but you can’t go after the witches here. It isn’t safe. Even when we had witches before, we didn’t have so many and they sure as shit weren’t banding together. Please, do not antagonize the witches. We are going to need you and I am not sure exactly what these women can do, how far they can go. I do know that Dagma can kill people without ever touching them. I don’t think that is limited to just humans.”

Vincent seems surprised, “Really? You think she could take us out?”

Malic says, “I don’t think she would even break a sweat to do it. She doesn’t want to, but if you hurt her mother or aunt, or Goddess forbid, her daughter, I don’t think there is a power on earth that would save the person responsible.”

Gage nods, “He’s right. You weren’t here when we fetched Valdís back. I don’t know how necessary we really were.”

Vincent asks, “How many were there?”

I tell him, “Roughly a couple hundred. She walked through with a witch holding a shield and men fell left and right. It’s possible she could be overwhelmed, if it was her alone. But we don’t know that she can’t decide to take out large swathes of people at a go if she chose. Personally, I don’t want to test the theory.”

Vincent says, “I see. Perhaps I could agree that I was rather harsh with them and they’re not really acting out of turn.”

Malic sighs in relief, his shoulders dropping a bit with the release of tension, “I am glad to hear you choose that.
